Duck and cover...or just sitting ducks?

Oliver, a 12-year-old student, finds himself grappling with the unsettling reality of sitting under his desk, contemplating the fragility of life. As the routine alarm echoes through the corridors, Oliver's thoughts wander, questioning the efficacy and necessity of such drills.

But what truly unfolds within the confines of a classroom during these harrowing moments? Betsie, a seasoned middle school teacher, offers a compelling glimpse into the heart of the experience. Drawing from her own encounters with numerous lockdowns, she extends an invitation for readers to join Oliver as he navigates the intricacies of a routine lockdown practice.

Through the eyes of both student and teacher, this poignant narrative sheds light on the raw emotions, fears, and unanswered questions that accompany these drills. Prepare to step into the shoes of those who must confront the unthinkable, as Oliver and his classmates grapple with the chilling possibility of becoming mere sitting ducks in a world fraught with uncertainty.

EDITORIAL REVIEWS:

"I really enjoyed this book. Schools face some different issues than prior generations. This is the same for teachers as well as the kids. Teachers wear more “hats” than thirty years ago. The teacher in the story plays an important role in trying to keep the children calm whilst dealing with her own human struggles. To the theme: School shootings? While this would have always been a possibility it was not on a top 1000 list of school worries. Columbine changed that with too many copy cats since…Author Morris does a nice job of interweaving some different themes into her short but complete story. Oliver is a young boy still reeling from the shock of his mother’s suicide and is forced to deal with the uncertainty of a school shooter. While these are heavy themes for kids, they are the reality of our world. As adults we need to talk to our young ones about these themes. This book is a good intro to some healthy conversations. I recommend this to anybody with kids or in education. Heck, it’s a good book to remind all of us of the struggle of youth and what our teachers go through." - B. Seller - 5 stars

"My Auntie bought the book to support her friend. I was so excited because she was an artist and now an author. She has inspiration me with becoming an author (because I'm already an artist). This book was really good. We have these drills at my school and at first they were scary. But now they are not as scary. We have to have drills so we stay safe. There is a Potty Bucket too, but you can only use the for real bathroom emergencies; not to have a laugh with your friends. I think this book should be in the library. If we had a book to read before the drills, maybe they wouldn't have been so scary. I love the pictures; they are literally beautiful. I like that I can read the story without any help. I was able to sound out the hard words. The story was really good and I liked the boy. He was cool!" *Auntie (age waaayyyy over 8)

"This book was a great conversation starter! I had no idea that my niece has these drills at her school. She told us everything about the drills. She went on for over an hour. We have asked if we could donate a few copies to her school and are waiting for an answer." - Tiffany - 5 stars
